On either side of the central shaft, a young boy plays the bagpipes and a girl carries a basket of flowers made of Meissen porcelain (in the style of subjects created by Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706–1775), master modeler and artistic director of the Manufacture).
In the center, a tangle of naturally painted branches adorned with porcelain flowers and painted metal foliage supports the dial and rests on a chiseled and gilded bronze rockery terrace.
This “porcelain jewelry”—an expression sometimes used in the 18th century to refer to these composite and very luxurious decorative objects—was probably intended to adorn the top of a mantelpiece or chest of drawers.
